STIMULI-RESPONSIVE MULTIFUNCTIONAL NANOCARRIERS FOR ON-DEMAND DRUG RELEASE: BRIDGING SMART MATERIAL DESIGN WITH CLINICAL TRANSLATION

Abstract

Stimuli-responsive multifunctional nanocarriers are advanced, intelligent drug delivery systems specifically designed to release their therapeutic contents in reaction to certain internal triggers like pH levels, enzymes, or redox conditions, as well as external factors such as temperature, light, or magnetic fields, enabling targeted and immediate drug release. By incorporating responsive materials, ligands, and imaging agents, these nanocarriers facilitate accurate spatial and temporal regulation of drug distribution in the body, notably improving therapeutic effectiveness while reducing off-target impacts and overall toxicity. The clinical promise of these nanocarriers is particularly noticeable in the management of cancer, inflammatory conditions, and neurological illnesses, where their multifunctional design facilitates both therapeutic and diagnostic applications (theranostics). As initiatives progress to
address issues related to biocompatibility, large-scale production, and regulatory clearance, these nanocarriers are set to transform personalized medicine by enabling more precise, effective, and safer drug delivery.
