Beyond Innovation: An Ethical and Equitable Review of Emerging Healthcare Technologies (2020–2025)
Abstract
Global health services have been altered drastically in the past half-decade, a transformation accelerated by COVID-19 and rising demand for inclusive, tech-based solutions. This review
delves into eleven emerging healthcare technologies, with special focus on AI Mental Health Tools, 3D bioprinting, nanomedicine, and immersive VR/AR. Through a narrative approach, synthesizing knowledge from 40+ peer-reviewed articles from 2020-2025 (scoped from PubMed, and JMIR), it interrogates these new technologies in light of clinical potential, scalability, ethics, equity of access for all, and usability. Some of the larger messages revolve around fostering interdisciplinarity, ethical governance, and closing the digital gap for the marginalized. It also points out these other barriers: fragmented infrastructure, algorithmic bias, and inertia
in regulation. To conclude, the review calls for a paradigm change wherein health-care innovation is eminently placed on human-centered, ethically underpinned systems that allow equity
to fully blossom across the globe.
