REVOLUTIONIZING DRUG DEVELOPMENT THROUGH ADDITIVE MANUFACTURING: A TRANSFORMATIVE APPROACH TO PERSONALIZED MEDICINE
Abstract
Additive manufacturing (AM), commonly referred to as 3D printing, has recently gained prominence in pharmaceutical sciences as a breakthrough technology, offering a new dimension to drug development and delivery. Its capacity to precisely control formulation parameters, dosage strengths, and release profiles enables the creation of patient-specific therapeutics that traditional manufacturing cannot achieve. By supporting rapid prototyping, on-demand production, and the design of complex drug architectures, AM (3D printing) directly advances the vision of personalized and precision medicine.
Recent progress has shown AM (3D printing)’s potential to accelerate preclinical screening, minimize waste, reduce development costs, and enhance therapeutic outcomes. Regulatory
milestones, such as the approval of the first 3D-printed drug, reflect growing recognition of this paradigm shift, although challenges remain in scalability, quality assurance, material compatibility, and regulatory standardization. By revolutionizing the processes of drug development, additive manufacturing (3D printing) simultaneously paves the way for a transformative shift toward personalized medicine. The precision, flexibility, and patient-centered focus enabled by AM (3D printing) embody the very principles of personalization, making the two concepts inseparable in practice.
This review explores how AM (3D printing) is transforming drug development and its critical role in making personalized medicine a practical reality. By examining current applications, technological innovations, and future directions, we highlight AM (3D printing) as a cornerstone in the evolution of patient-centered pharmaceutical care.
