FLAVONOIDS TO POLYPHENOLS: REVISITING MEDICINAL PLANTS IN THE MANAGEMENT OF SKIN DISEASES
Abstract
Medicinal plants' natural bioactive compounds and low side effects when compared tosynthetic treatments have drawn a lot of attention to their therapeutic potential in dermatology. This review highlights the pharmacological characteristics and effectiveness of the wide variety of plants that have historically been used to treat skin disorders, including psoriasis, acne, eczema, and skin ageing. It has been demonstrated that plants with anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, antibacterial, and wound-healing qualities include aloe vera, sandalwood (Santalum album), chamomile (Matricaria chamomilla), and Alexandrian laurel. Flavonoids, terpenes, and polyphenols are just a few of the bioactive substances that these plants use to help maintain and repair healthy skin. The study also explores the molecular mechanisms that underpin their therapeutic actions, emphasising the necessity for additional clinical trials to confirm their safety and efficacy in modern dermatological practice. Medicinal plants continue to be a possible option or supplement to traditional skin care treatments.
